Saab’s Carl-Gustaf sales over $500m in 2023

Sales of the Saab’s Carl-Gustaf M4 recoilless rifle have exceeded $500m so far in 2023, which is proving an attractive option for countries looking at how such weapons systems can be applied in the modern battlespace. Announcing its latest $123.6m sale of the Carl-Gustaf to an unnamed customer in late-November, Saab had seen success throughout the year with wins in the UK, US, Sweden, Australia, Japan, India, Lithuania, as well as the Nato alliance.  

Canada opts for Boeing P-8 Poseidon patrol aircraft

Canada has signed of an agreement to acquire up to 16 Boeing P-8 Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft, in a deal that could be worth up to $10.4bn, marking a step change in capability for its armed forces. The P-8A Poseidon will replace the ageing CP-140 Aurora fleet which has been in service for more than 40 years. Due to be fully operational by 2033, the Canadian P-8s are expected to be active in the Arctic region, as well as meeting existing NORAD and Nato obligations.

Damen to build multipurpose naval vessel for Portugal

Damen Shipyards Group has secured a contract for the design, build, and outfitting of a multipurpose vessel for the Portuguese Navy, with the 107m-long vessel intended to carry operations such as search and rescue, maritime security, and disaster relief. The third largest sector in the Portuguese defence market is naval vessels and surface combatants, which is forecast to total $283.8m from 2023-2028, according to GlobalData. Damen also built two M-class frigates for Portugal between 2009 and 2010.

Rheinmetall secures 155mm Ukraine artillery ammunition deal

German defence prime Rheinmetall has secured its latest deal to manufacture 155mm artillery shells, this time signing off on a €142m deal with Ukraine, which will receive tens of thousands of munitions under the terms of the agreement. The shells will be manufactured by Rheinmetall Expal Munitions, the company’s recently acquired Spanish subsidiary. The delivery of these munitions is scheduled for 2025, with a prior order of around 40,000 rounds expected for production and delivery in 2024.
